Got this card to rebuild my credit and I got approved for $200. Though the limit was small, it was better than the First Premier I have since I did not have to pay any annual fees. They key thing was for me to pay my bills in full every month so that I avoid the high interest rates.

About a year later, I applied and got approved for the Barclays rewards mastercard. Knowing what I know now, this is the card I would try first before the drive for five (since you can only use the d-4-5 at Shell).

Got this card a couple of years ago.

Pros
You save money on gas
You build or rebuild your credit without nasty fees

Cons
You can only use at Shell Stations
Need a minimum fill to earn the gas savings
Rates are high if you do not pay in full

My advice is to get this card as a means to rebuild your credit before moving on to a regular Visa or Mastercard.

I was in the credit rebuilding mode when I got this card. Prior to this, I had a secured card with a credit union. I graduated from that to a Credit One. Got my scores up to the mid 600s, and decided to get a couple of store cards and regular cards. But I got turned down for cards like Gap, and even Barclays (which is surprising given the stuff I have read on other forums.

So here is my 2 cents on this. If your scores are in the 600s, try other cards like Capital One and Barclays for example. You should be able to get those. If not, this card would be an alternative (although an inferior one because you can only use it at Shell). I suspect that scores are not the only thing that issuers look at. My past collection accounts and delinquencies are probably reasons why I got declined for other cards.

After getting the card in mail, I proceeded to set up the autopay feature. It worked well for a couple of months and then for some reason, it did not work during the third month and I got dinged with late fees etc. Was really pissed and called CSR. But they said it was "probably my banks fault" and did not refund me at all. If you are the snail mail type, then this is probably ok. But if you are the autopay sort of person, I would avoid this card.

I actually have both the drive for five and the mastercard with $500 CL each. So it is possible to get both. If I had it my way, I would just get the mastercard because you could earn more cash back (if you spend more - the terms of the mastercard are tiered so the more you spend on the card a month, the more cash back you earn).

I have had the shell gas card for years (before they changed it to this new "drive for five". So I guess I will give my opinion here. Though I have had it for years, I have not really used them. Then in 2009, I dusted the card out of the drawer and used it at the station but was declined. Called CSR and was told my card was canceled because it was inactive and that I was no longer profitable! Will never do business with Citi again.

After I got this card, the first thing I did was to sign up for auto pay. It worked the first time. But after that, I got hit with a late payment fee and a $5 interest charge! Called CSR but was told it was my banks fault. I could go on and on but here is my advice. Stay clear of this card.

I actually applied for the Mastercard and got this card instead. The 5 cents savings seems ok until I read the fine prints that you have to fill up to at least 45 gallons. Should have read this because I have missed out a couple of months of savings because of the shortfall.
