PROS
  • Earn extra points for Cabela's purchases
CONS
  • Different APRs for non-Cabela's purchases
  • 2% rebate is low for a retail store credit card
Executive Summary - This card gets only a 3.6 ratings because the 2% (or 2 points) you earn for Cabela's purchases is lower than most retail store cards. An interesting quirk about this card is that you have one APR for Cabela's purchases and and higher rate for non-Cabela's purchases. If you get the Visa Signature version, you can earn 5% rebates rather than 2% and get complimentary concierge service.

This card has been around since 1995 and today, Cabela's Club has over two million credit card holders1. In 2001, Cabela's Club formed the World Foremost bank to exclusively issue this card for them and run all the merchant processing and backend operations.

Key Features - Well, to incentivize folks to sign up for their card, they are giving out an automatic free $25.00 upon approval of your card. If you use your card five times for non-Cabela's purchases within thirty days, you will get $10 in Cabela's points in your account. You can also earn 5% at Cenex stores or cenex.com for the first 60 days and 2% thereafter. You earn two points for every dollar you spend on Cabela's purchases (that is equivalent to getting a 2% rebate) and one point for every dollar you spend anywhere else that Visa is accepted. You can earn unlimited points and they do not expire as long as your account is in good standing. You can redeem your points anytime for Cabela's merchandise, whether it be at the store or online. For all of you outdoor enthusiasts, earning these points will be great so you can earn rewards towards your outdoor gear for either hunting or camping.

Visa Signature Version? - There is a clause on their application page that says that if you get approved for their "Visa Signature" version, you can earn five points per dollar spent on Cabela's products rather than just two points. You will also get extra travel services and complimentary concierge services.

Online Shopping Mall - bonuspointsnetwork.com - In July 2011, Cabela's teamed up with Cartera to offer their card holders an online shopping portal much like shopdiscover or Citi Bonus Cash Center. The online shopping mall can be accessed through www.bonuspointsnetwork.com. They have online and in store merchants and using your card to make purchases at their partner stores gets you more Cabela's Reward Points.

Is 2% rewards good enough - In my opinion, offering a 2% equivalent in rewards or rebate is really on the low end of the scale. Most "retail store credit cards" offer more than 2% in rewards. For example, the the Bass Pro Shop credit card gives their cardholders 4% rebates when they use their card to buy their outdoor gears from them. The Target Red Card gives cardholders a 5% discount on their merchandise. So in the big scheme of things, 2% looks like a really low number. You might be one of the luckier ones that get the "Visa Signature version" and be able to earn 5%. But if not, you are stuck with 2%.

Cabela's offers another option for their customers who do not have a Cabela's Club Visa card to still earn points. They have a Cabela's Club Rewards card. It is not a credit card and all are approved. You must be 14 to apply. The only thing this doesn't offer that the credit card does is really not worth mentioning, because it's credit card related. Obviously as it is not a credit card, you will not be able to earn 2% back at any Cenex branded retailer, 1% back on other purchases and you can't view your account balance or pay credit card online. However, you are able to look online and see what your point balance is and how far you have to go to get your new tent or sleeping bag!

Should You Get The Cabela's Club Visa? - If you shop regularly at Cabela's store, you should seriously consider this card because you can earn rewards points and redeem them for some free good periodically when you have accumulated enough points. The card will especially appeal to the outdoor camping or tourism business who get many of their supplies from Cabela's store. Finally, there is something else you should be aware of. This card actually charges you a different interest rate for Cabela's and non-Cabela's purchases. The APR is obviously lower for Cabela's product purchases. If you pay your bills in full every month, then this should never be an issue. But if you do carry a balance, you have to be aware of this.
