Review of the Shell Mastercard from Citi

The Shell Mastercard from Citi was last reviewed on 2nd August 2006.

shell mastercard
Summary - The Shell Mastercard will appeal to those who use Shell gas stations for their gasoline purchases. The 5% rebate you get is the highest you can get for any gas credit cards. The apr is also reasonably low. Read further.....

Gas Rebates - The Shell Mastercard pays 5% rebates for Shell gasoline purchases (excluding diesel and aviation fuel). You also earn 5% rebates on your first $100 purchase at Jiffy Lube and 1% rebates on other purchases. Your rebates will be automatically redeemed against your next purchase at Shell stations. Hence, you do not have to wait for any annual rebate checks. You will also earn a $20 rebate with your first purchase on the card.

Fees - There is no annual fee for the first year. Thereafter, you will be charged a $20.00 annual fee if you use the card less than nine times during one calendar year. If you use the card at Shell stations at least nine times in the previous calendar year, there will be no annual fee. This should not be an issue for most cardholders who you use Shell stations very often. The apr is prime rate plus 5.99%, which is reasonably low. The average daily balance method (including new purchases) is used to calculate monthly balances. You get an introductory 0% apr offer on balance transfers for six months. There is no balance transfer fee for this offer.

Manage Shell Credit Card account online - You can also manage your Shell credit card account online, including your Shell credit card payment online.

Conclusion - We recommend the Shell MasterCard from Citi to those who use Shell stations to purchase their gasoline (note that you do not get rebates for diesel purchase). The 5% rebate payout is the best rate that you can get with any gas credit card. For those who carry a balance, you can also get a reasonably low apr.

Update - We are no longer offering the Shell Mastercard on our site. As an alternative, we recommend the The Discover® Platinum Gas Card, which also pays 5% rebates for gasoline purchases at any station. You also earn 5% rebates for auto maintenance purchases.
